Traditional Christmas Gifts and Presents
Below is a list of traditional Christmas Gifts that are given at Christmas and a brief explanation of the meaning behind these Christmas traditions.
Candle - symbolising light and the sun or even the star of wonder. Some people put them in their windows to lead Joseph through the streets on Christmas eve.
Father Christmas - St Nicolas has become perhaps the most commercial symbol of Christmas. He is someone who is said to have given away all his wealth and helped the sick and the poor.
Gold coins - It is said that St Nicolas dropped gold coins down the chimney of three sisters who could not marry because the family were too poor to have a dowry. The coins fell into some shoes that were left near the hearth and into some stockings that were hung up to dry.
Poinsettia - Joel R. Poinsett, an American politician posted in Mexico, brought a red and green plant from Mexico to America. It was perfect to brighten the Christmas room and it was named poinsettia after the man himself.
