What is the history of Christmas?
Christmas Facts and Information:
If I were to ask anyone why we celebrate Christmas, most people would say it's because of Jesus. But winter celebrations date back to long before Jesus when people would celebrate light and birth in the darkest days of the middle of winter. They would feast on slaughtered cattle with the knowledge that they did not have to feed them through the winter. Some believed that every spark from a fire symbolled a new born cattle that would come in the spring.
In the 4th century Pope Julius I chose December 25 for the date of Jesus birth (in spite of that fact that the shepherds described in the Bible would not be herding in the middle of winter). It is believed that by choosing to hold Christmas at the same time as traditional winter solstice festivals, there were increased chances that Christmas would be popularly embraced. And so the celebration of the birth of Jesus began.
Every country celebrates Christmas in different ways. In the Phillipeans for example, Christmas is celebrated from the beginning of September because September ends BER and so does December, so they believe that the count down to Christmas starts with the first BER month of the year - September.
