As you know there are many types of metals and precious stones that go into making jewellery. Here is a run down of a few of the most
popular:-
Gold
Everyone loves a bit of gold jewellery for a present. Gold jewellery is so easy to find because there are a lot of different styles of gold bracelets and gold necklaces and gold earrings available now.
24 carat gold means PURE gold
22 carat gold means 91.7% gold
18 carat is 75% pure gold
14 carat is 58.5% pure gold
12 carat gold is 50% pure gold
9 carat gold is 37.5% pure gold
Did you know that there are even different colour golds now. All gold is yellow, however it has become fashionable to mix this gold with other metals to change the colour to white gold, pink gold or even red gold.
Nearly all ladies like a gold diamond necklace, bracelet or earrings for her surprise present.
Sterling Silver
Sterling silver jewellery has become more popular again because of it's white or grey colour and it's easily affordable price. Many people buy sterling silver and cubic zircona jewellery because they are very pretty and affordable. To the untrained eye sterling silver can even appear like the much more expensive metal platinum.
Sterling silver should contain 92% pure silver. Pure silver is too soft to produce long lasting items of jewellery. In the UK hallmarks are applied to jewellery to show that the purity of the silver is applied (a Lion), the date (a letter) and the place of manufacture (e.g anchor indicated the city of Birmingham).
White gold or platinum?
Due to increased popularity of grey or white coloured jewellery recently, platinum has become a very popular type of jewellery. Platinum has become popular partly because many people think it is better than white gold and partly because being more expensive than gold, jewellers make more money by selling it.
Yellow gold can be mixed with nickel or palladium to produce white gold. Palladium is equally expensive as platinum and gives a very white colour like unpolished platinum.
Both platinum and white gold rings will need to be polished when they loose their shine, approximately once every three years. With white gold a new rhodium layer is added whereas with platinum part of the metal is taken away with polishing. The white gold ring should last longer and maintain a strong mount compared to the platinum ring which will reduce in size with each clean and can be more brittle in general.
